Our newest member of the EMA Events team shares her experiences over the last few months…..
“Time to get your cup of tea and biscuits ready, are you sitting comfortably? I’ve been working at EMA Events since July 2012, and already I have done so much exciting stuff I can’t think where to start!
I was lucky enough to join the EMA Events team at the Glynde Food and English Wine Festival back in July, although I didn’t know it yet, this was just the beginning of all the fun to come! Working on the festival was such a great experience as it allowed me to take part in various elements of the event, observing how it is managed in every aspect and applying my knowledge from my Events Management degree into practice. One thing I hadn’t learnt about working in the events industry is that it could include spreading straw across a muddy festival site! In the events industry, every day is different and you just have to take it as it comes – even if that does mean getting a little mucky! The event was a huge success, even though the weather was against us, with a large turnout of visitors to the amazing Glynde Place.
I then joined the EMA Events team officially in August as an Events and Marketing Executive. Within this role I work on various projects for a number of our clients, from food festivals to launch parties and strategic marketing delivery.
If I recall, I have been lucky enough to work in a number of events and marketing based organisations before starting at EMA Events, in which has helped me in my new work. I was determined in the first year of my degree to get lots of work experience to improve my CV and I was lucky enough to get three internships over the year and also work on a number of different events.
I started in the events industry working for a blue chip company on a large corporate event in Suffolk. The event included a drinks reception, awards ceremony and sit down meal. Within a month of leaving this placement I started a marketing internship, my role included assistance with their re-branding including designing a new website and developing a new marketing strategy. Finally I was lucky enough to be accepted onto a fulltime summer internship arranging monthly business networking breakfasts and a quarterly business magazine. I am extremely lucky to have had all these opportunities as I know that it is hard to get internships and work experience in the industry in the recent years.
Back to EMA and we have not stopped lately, we have just completed a six week event for one of our clients – GNMA Ltd. The event was called ‘Your Life, Your Skills, Your Future’ and it took place at Tower Ramparts Shopping Centre in Ipswich. The event was opened on the 25th September by The Mayor of Ipswich and Nick Pandolfi from Town102. The event consisted of stands and advisors from a number of key organisations in East Anglia including Otley College and WS Training. Each week was centered around a different theme from recruitment and employment to support to work. We wanted to reach a large audience and so each week was targeted to a different cross section of the local community. Here’s one of my snaps from the day,
My role was to contact various training, educational and recruitment organisations, as well as employers, to promote the opportunity to take a stand at the event. I then liaised with them throughout the run up to the event and on the launch day of the six-week event my role here was looking after the stand holders, and handing out flyers! It was a great experience for me to be involved with an event targeted to the general public, and in a venue in the town centre that could reach a large audience. Since I had only been and EMA for a month it was also a brilliant opportunity for me to really get to know our clients and all the brilliant services they offer a little bit better!
Currently we’re working on a number of large food festivals for 2013 so most of my time is spent finding potential sponsors, entertainment and contractors to help us deliver the events, as well as delivering a number of social media build projects.
It is all very exciting, we don’t stop here – there’s always something to be planning, so 2013 is looking very exciting with lots of new potential projects, check again soon for my updates!
